Robert Friedland

Founder and Executive Co-Chairman

A co-founder of Ivanhoe Energy, Robert Friedland is an international financier who has been associated with international resource and technology ventures for 25 years. Mr. Friedland is in the vanguard of North American natural-resource sector leaders who have pioneered business links in Greater China and the Asia Pacific region during the past 20 years.

Mr. Friedland is also Chairman of Ivanhoe Capital Corporation, his family's private company that specializes in venture capital and project financing from bases in Singapore and Beijing. Under his leadership, Ivanhoe executives and affiliated benefiting companies have raised several billion dollars on international capital markets since 1993.

As the founder of Turquoise Hill Resources (formerly Ivanhoe Mines), Mr. Friedland had directed the assembly by Turquise Hill Resources of a portfolio of interests in several countries during the past 12 years. Turquoise Hill's core asset is the 12-kilometre-long (7.5-mile) chain of copper-gold deposits discovered at Oyu Tolgoi in southern Mongolia. Oyu Tolgoi, within 80 kilometres of the Mongolia-China border, is the world's largest and highest-grade copper-gold mine development project.

Carlos A. Cabrera

Executive Chairman

Carlos A. Cabrera is the Executive Chairman of Ivanhoe Energy. Prior to his appointment, he served as the founding President and CEO of the National Institute of Low Carbon and Clean Energy (NICE) based in Beijing, China. 

Mr. Cabrera is a Distinguished Associate to the World Energy Consultancy Firm FACTS. He also serves on the Board of Directors of GEVO, a publicly traded biotechnology company, and the Gas Technology Institute, a U.S.-based leading research, development and training organization serving energy and environmental markets.

He is an advisor to the National Oil Company of Azerbaijan, SOCAR, an Executive Board member of Big West Oil, a privately-owned U.S. firm, and a member of the Global Advisory Board of the University of the Chicago Booth School of Business.

As a former 35-year employee with UOP-a leading international supplier to the petroleum refining, petrochemical and gas processing industries-Mr. Cabrera held posts as the President/CEO and then Chairman.

Granted nine patents by the U.S. Patent Office, he has authored numerous publications and served on several industry panels-including the Board of Directors of NPRA and the NPRA Petrochemical Committee-as a worldwide business and technical leader. He received an honorary membership to the Instrument Society of America, was inducted to the University of Kentucky Engineering Hall Of Distinction, awarded the 2007 Fuels and Petrochemicals Division Leadership Award by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, honored with the Honeywell Corporation 2008 Senior Leadership Award, and named to the Hispanic Business Magazine's Corporate Elite in 2009.

Mr. Cabrera earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kentucky and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Chicago.

Marlene Duff

Senior Vice President Human Resources

Marlene Duff is responsible for company-wide human resource strategy, staffing, compensation & benefits, organizational design, talent management and human resource administrative services for Ivanhoe Energy Inc.

Prior to joining Ivanhoe in 2008, Ms. Duff held human resource management positions in oilfield services, banking, chemicals and E&P’s in both domestic and international organizations. With over 30 years of experience, Ms. Duff has been responsible for people strategies that delivered on best practice cultures & work environments and large scale redesign of HR programs in performance management, resource planning, leadership development and business process improvement.

Ms. Duff holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Athabasca University, Alberta Canada and is a designated Certified Human Resource Professional.

Joseph Kuhach

Senior Vice President Upstream Technology and Integration

Joseph Kuhach is responsible for global upstream technology and for providing strategic leadership in assessing and developing Ivanhoe’s assets. He has 27 years of energy industry experience focused predominantly on heavy oil recovery and upgrading. Prior to joining Ivanhoe in 2005, Mr. Kuhach spent 20 years with Shell and subsidiaries in engineering and management positions. As Manager of Technology he oversaw heavy oil recovery efforts for Shell’s largest thermal assets including Belridge, Cymric, McKittrick, and Lost Hills fields. During his time with Shell, Mr. Kuhach was a leader in advancing horizontal well implementation in thermal recovery applications. He led the effort to design and implement Shell’s first grass roots thermal horizontal well project. Mr. Kuhach has published numerous papers and is a past technical editor for Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) Reservoir Evaluation and Engineering magazine.

Mr. Kuhach was appointed to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Educational Council and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT as well as a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Refining from Colorado School of Mines.

William E. Parry

Senior Vice President & General Counsel

Bill Parry joined Ivanhoe Energy as Senior Vice President and General Counsel in April 2013 and is responsible for all legal activities for the company.

He brings a wealth of experience having managed the legal affairs of several chemical and energy companies in North America and internationally. Specifically, Mr. Parry has extensive commercial legal experience with acquisitions and divestitures, technology transfer, and managing patent programs, as well as experience leading a law department. He was Vice President and General Counsel at Nalco Chemical Company, Assistant General Counsel at UOP, and has business experience as Director of Business Development and Planning for UOP’s catalyst and adsorbent business and as President of Nalco Industrial Outsourcing. Bill also acted as a legal consultant for the National Institute for Clean and Low Carbon Energy in Beijing.

Mr. Parry received a chemical engineering degree from the University of Notre Dame and a J.D. from Duquesne University’s School of Law. He is licensed to practise law in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Santiago Pastor Morris

Mr. Santiago Pástor Morris has over 24 years of experience in upstream design, construction, and operations in the international oil and gas industry. His expertise has taken him beyond Latin America to the USA and Europe, working with companies like Petroecuador, Perenco, Petrobras, Texaco, Oryx Energy and Kerr-Maggie.

Mr. Pástor Morris graduated as a Mechanical Engineer in the National Polytechnic School of Ecuador. He holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Tecnológico of Monterrey, Mexico; a Master’s degree in Science in Project specialization with the Université de Management in Switzerland and a certificate in International Petroleum Management from the International Human Resources Development Corporation in Boston.

Greg Phaneuf

Senior Vice President Business Development and Corporate Strategy

Greg Phaneuf is responsible for the overall approach and execution on Ivanhoe Energy's existing corporate development projects, as well pursuing new corporate development and financing initiatives. Greg also leads Ivanhoe's Investor Relations and Communications Department and is a key spokesperson in dealing with the investment community. 

Greg has 22 years of related experience which includes Vice President, Corporate Development, for The Churchill Corporation where he led a $390 million corporate acquisition, as well as leading the associated $200 million equity and convertible debenture financing and a new $200 million revolving credit facility. Prior to joining Churchill, Greg was Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of a private energy resource and development company and Treasurer for Western Oil Sands, where he actively participated in that company's financings, M&A activities and risk management functions. Greg was an integral member of the deal team associated with Western Oil Sands $7 billion divestiture to Marathon Corporation in 2007.

Mr. Phaneuf holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Saskatchewan, Chartered Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst designations.

Gerald Schiefelbein

Senior Vice President Finance and Chief Financial Officer

Gerald Schiefelbein was appointed Chief Financial Officer of Ivanhoe Energy in November 2009. He brings 26 years of finance experience in the international oil and gas industry, having worked in North America, Europe and the Middle East with the BP Group and Amoco.

Immediately prior to joining Ivanhoe Energy, Mr. Schiefelbein was Chief Financial Officer with Chicago-based BP Integrated Supply & Trading, where he led the finance department for BP's crude and oil-products supply and trading operations in the Americas. He has substantial finance and control experience throughout the exploration and production value chain, including exploration bidding, production operations, gas plants, pipelines and supply and trading operations. In addition, he is highly experienced with merging companies and operations.

Mr. Schiefelbein holds an Undergraduate Degree in Business from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a Masters in Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, in Illinois.

Michael Silverman

Senior Vice President Downstream Technology & Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Mike Silverman joined Ivanhoe in 2007 from Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) and is responsible for all technical aspects of Ivanhoe Energy's proprietary heavy oil upgrading process (HTL). This includes interfacing with leading engineering firms in the design of commercial HTL installations, technology development and intellectual property management.

Dr. Silverman has almost 30 years of experience in technology development and management, including the commercialization and marketing of new technologies, and is a leading expert in the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) processes. His roles at KBR included Vice President of Petrochemicals, where he was responsible for all aspects of the petrochemicals technology portfolio, and Director of KBR's Technology Centre in Houston, a state-of-the-art facility hosting pilot plants that support all of KBR's refining and petrochemical technology development. Prior to joining KBR, Dr. Silverman was the Manager of Technology Development for Stone & Webster, Inc. where he managed all aspects of technology development in the refining business, including FCC's and several heavy oil upgrading technologies. Earlier experience included the management of fluid catalytic cracking for Tenneco Oil Company, and an assistant professorship in Chemistry at Rutgers University.

Dr. Silverman holds a Bachelor Degree in Chemistry from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Brown University.
